Hi, I’m Shelby Holmes and I am an illustrator located in Long Beach California. For the past two years I’ve also been working in the coffee industry as a barista and production assistant for a local Roastery. This in turn has inspired the topics of quite a few of my illustrations as of late, though I love being able to bridge the gap between my two passions. My work and the color palettes I choose are often reminiscent of how vibrant my childhood was. I like to think of my abstract landscapes often filled with excessive amounts of doors and windows as portals to the next big adventure. In this universe that I have created you might find, flying lemons in the sky, walking trees, skateboarding coffee cups, and characters that may be a bit creepy at first glance. It brings me so much joy when people talk to me about my art and attach their own elaborate stories to them.

My work takes a lot of inspiration from ethical philosophy as well as from the people in my life - my friends in particular. They’re the funniest people I know and I owe my entire sense of humor to them. I like to use humor (particularly dark humor) to communicate philosophical concepts that speak to me. I’m not a big TV guy, but when it comes to anime I just adore it - for the graphics, the music, and the consistent emphasis on virtue. My work takes on notes of this aesthetic as well. I give particular attention to small details because for me it feels like leaving little breadcrumbs for people to investigate. I’ve added artwork to the backside or underside of things, even on the inside, perhaps never to be discovered. As for the way I sign my art.. I’ve always hated signing my name on a finished work. I used to leave everything completely blank. Something about signing felt phony. I made the artwork because I felt called to do so. Whether my name is on it or not doesn’t impact the function of the artwork which is, of course, to speak. I honestly just started signing my name on things because I realized that to survive as an artist that I’d need SOME form of identification. So I settled for signing my name half-ass. With that I stand by the idea that my name and any recognition that may come because of it is, quite simply, unimportant. I feel no need to HIDE my name. Like yes - it’s Chase Soghomonian. But who cares? Look to the art.
